This novel takes you right into the mind of its central character, the obsessive and dysfunctional Matt. He's not the most likeable of characters but you get an insight into why he's the way he is and you find yourself rooting for him. It's basically about his search for love and acceptance, something I guess we can all relate to.It has some great set pieces, for example the retirement party in chapter 10, and a few other twists and surprises that keep the novel racing along till the end. The conclusion was a little abrupt but in keeping with the rest of the book and quite satisfying.
If you like your fiction dark and gritty, I'd thoroughly recommend it.
